Today the new Marine Bill was passed by the Scottish parliament. This considerably strengthens the protection for seals in Scotland. Crucially, the new laws specify that the Scottish parliament can prohibit the killing of seals at certain times, such as breeding seasons, when seals are likely to be heavily pregnant or rearing dependent pups. The Advocates for Animals campaign resulted in 21,000 messages to Members of the Scottish Parliament in the past 10 days. If you were one of those who sent a message, I thank you.
It would, in my opinion, be ideal if the killing of seals were banned completely, but at least some progress has been made.
