After almost a year I have finished converting the Speech Internet Dictionary to a new format. Along the way I have added General American pronunciations of dictionary terms, added a number of new entries, edited quite a few of the existing entries, compiled a complete index and added many more cross-references. The rejuvenated SID now has his address in the side-bar. All future edits will be done on this version. The old version will stay available, but I do not intend to make any alterations to it.
Please go and have a look at the new SID and let me know if you come across anything that needs attention. I’d also be grateful if you let your colleagues and students know about it.

Why no link to it? http://blogjam.name/sid/ for those who are as clueless as I am. Google searches also brought up several old ones (and not the new one); I think it would be helpful to add links to the NEW one from the old one—you’d never know that there was a new one! (note that I read the rss feed of this page, and couldn’t remember what SID stood for so had to search for “SID Maidment” first to remember what it stood for. Maybe I’m not your typical SID-using reader…)

[æbˈdʌkʃn] — should the first vowel be schwa?
[ˌælviˈəʊlə] — this is how I initially pronounced it, but I have since heard that it’s supposed to be stressed on the second syllable.

Both æbˈdʌkʃn and əbˈdʌkʃn are acceptable for General British, I think. I am sticking to one acceptable pron. per entry, however.
alveolar I have only ever heard ælˈviːələr from Gen Am speakers.

Sorry you had troubles finding young SID. I have put the link in the post. The SID link in the right side-bar also points to the new version. I hadn’t got around to linking from old SID to new SID. That’s on my list.
