I thought you might like to know this

This has just been brought to my attention. I think we should have been told years ago!

“The work of art as a sinthôme on the other hand, is a unique response, that contains the enigma it corresponds to and, that brings it about, an enigma that resonates a lacuna of quite different status in the Symbolic; it does not correspond to lacks defined by the phallic mechanism of castration but to whatever is not there, to what is yet to come, to what resists the Symbolic and to the mysterious and fascinating territory of that which is not yet even unconscious or to what is impossible for cognition.”

  1. Petr says:

This quote illustrates the zenith of deep thinking.

  2. A perfect definition of modern art!

  3. Sidney Wood says:

    (1) a machine translation from Chinese, possibly back to Chinese then to English again, (2) computer generated English using a randomized selection from a set vocabulary.

  4. Petr says:

The person responsible for this outstanding stream of thoughts seems to be a lady called Bracha Ettinger, who presented a hitherto unpublished paper at Leeds University in 2000 with the crystal-clear title: “Weaving a woman artist with-in the matrixial encounter-event.”

  5. John Maidment says:

    Sidney,

Two eminently sensible suggestions, neither of which, alas, appears to be the source.

    Petr,

My friend, JP, is an art historian and he is convinced that the source of the garbage is a French philosopher and psychiatrist called Jacques Lacan. However, as Ms Ettinger seems to be a thinker of the same ilk, you could well be right.

JP’s opinion of Lacan is short, extremely uncomplimentary and very rude, so I shall pass over it in silence.
