Finally, we have wall-to-wall Tudors on the BBC at the moment. One of the programmes I watched was about Thomas Cromwell. It was presented by Prof. Diarmaid MacCulloch. I wonder why he insists on pronouncing Anne Boleyn’s surname as ˈbɒlɪn, when he has two perfectly acceptable versions in bəˈlɪn and ˈbʊlən to choose from.

  1. I’ve just realised that Boleyn bəˈlɪn and Berlin bɜːˈlɪn constitute a minimal pair for ə vs. ɜː at least in GBE.
