In words like <em>anger<\/em>, <em>finger<\/em>, <em>hunger<\/em>, <em>linger<\/em>, where the ending is not a suffix (a finger is not someone who fings!) the combination is pronounced <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u014b\u0261<\/span>. In words where the ending is a suffix, such as <em>singer<\/em>, <em>singing<\/em>, <em>strongly<\/em>, the combination is pronounced <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u014b<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, there are some exceptions. The most important of these involves the comparative (&#8220;more&#8221;) and superlative (&#8220;most&#8221;) forms of the adjectives <em>long<\/em>, <em>strong<\/em> and <em>young<\/em>.
