Here are some example words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>calf, calves, calve, half, halve, halves, balm, almond, calm, palm, psalm<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Exceptions to this where the vowel is<span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"> \u00e6<\/span> rather than <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u0251\u02d0<\/span> ( but the &lt;l&gt; is still silent):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>salmon Salmond<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the letter following the &lt;al&gt; sequence is &lt;k&gt;, again the &lt;l&gt; is silent, but the vowel is pronounced <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u0254\u02d0<\/span>. Examples:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>chalk stalk talk walk<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are also some rather rare words where the spelling is &lt;aul&gt;.
