Elements may be subordinated to other elements. For example: <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>e<\/strong><\/span> is specified as containing the two elements <strong>I<\/strong> and <strong>A<\/strong>, but with the latter subordinate to the former. <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u025b<\/strong><\/span> contains the same two elements, but the former is subordinate to the latter. The elements used for vowel specification are: <strong>I<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=522\">palatality<\/a>, <strong>A<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1234\">openness<\/a>, <strong>U<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\" http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1100\">labiality<\/a> and <strong>@<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1236\">centrality<\/a>. The same elements are also used for consonant specification and are accompanied by others, such as <strong>?<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=546\">stop<\/a>, <strong>h<\/strong>: indicating friction, and <strong>R<\/strong>: indicating <a href=\" http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1798\">coronality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Also called <strong>unary feature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A component of speech sounds in recent phonological theories.
