There are various forms of breaking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pre-L breaking:<\/strong> vowels before <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u026b<\/strong><\/span> have a <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259<\/strong><\/span> offglide in many accents of English. Example: <em>feel <\/em><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>fi\u0259\u026b<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-R breaking:<\/strong> the development of a <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259<\/strong><\/span> offglide before <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/r\/<\/strong><\/span>. It is this phenomenon which is responsible for the appearance of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1096\">centring diphthongs<\/a> in many English accents. For example, <em>fear<\/em> has developed from <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>fi\u0279<\/strong><\/span> to <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>f\u026a\u0259<\/strong><\/span> by a process of pre-R breaking and subsequent loss of <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/r\/<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Southern breaking<\/strong>: occurs in Southern accents of USA English. Short vowels, especially before <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1100\">labial <\/a>consonants, have a <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259<\/strong><\/span> offglide. Examples: <em>lip<\/em> <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>l\u026a\u0259p]<\/strong><\/span>, <em>graph <\/em><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>gr\u00e6\u0259f<\/strong><\/span>. Before <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0283 \u0292 g \u014b<\/strong><\/span>, the offglide usually has a <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u026a<\/strong><\/span> quality.
