Focus devices include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>syntactic reorganisation, such as clefting.  English example: <em>It was Sid who said that.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>the use of of focus particles. Example from American English: <em>It is too an elephant.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=35\">intonational accent<\/a> placement.  English example:  <em>I didn&#8217;t WANT to get up.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Languages differ in the frequency of use of these various strategies. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Broad focus<\/strong> is used when the speaker wishes the whole of an utterance to be thought of as new information. In most accents of English this means that the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1815\">intonational nucleus<\/a> falls on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1542\">stressed syllable<\/a> of the last <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1734\">content word<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1113\">intonational phrase<\/a>.  For example:<em> He was a professor of Greek <strong>HIS<\/strong>tory.<\/em>  This would be an appropriate response to a question like: <em>Who was Samuel Bloggs?<\/em>, which introduces no information about the subject concerned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Narrow focus<\/strong> draws the attention of the hearer to one particular constituent, usually because the rest of the message contains information which is regarded as &#8220;old&#8221; or at least inferrable from the context.  For example, the comment: <em>Samuel Bloggs was a history professor<\/em> might well elicit the response: <em>Yes, he was a professor of <strong>GREEK <\/strong>history.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A linguistic device which a speaker uses to mark some part of the message as being particularly newsworthy.
