A good example is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolfgang_von_Kempelen%27s_Speaking_Machine\" target=\"_blank\">Von Kempelen&#8217;s Speaking Machine<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>More recently hardware machines like the Haskins <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=4505\" title=\":Pattern playback:\" target=\"_blank\">Pattern Playback<\/a> were used to make important contributions to the study of speech perception. <\/p>\n<p>These days speech synthesis is performed by software and there are many competing systems.
