Compact sounds have a concentration of energy in the middle of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=824\">frequency<\/a> range of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=344\">spectrum<\/a>. An example is the vowel <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0251<\/strong><\/span> which has a relatively high first <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=492\">formant <\/a>which is close to the frequency of the second formant. The opposite of compact is diffuse.
