Examples are: the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1542\">stress <\/a>status of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1066\">syllable<\/a>, the position within the syllable, the following or preceding sound. For instance, the Castilian Spanish <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/b\/<\/strong><\/span> phoneme has two allophones: <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[b]<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[\u03b2]<\/strong><\/span>. The conditioning factor governing the choice between them is what immediately precedes the phoneme.  If this is a pause or <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[m]<\/strong><\/span>, then the <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[b]<\/strong><\/span> allophone is used.  Elsewhere the <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[\u03b2]<\/strong><\/span> is used\u02d0 <em>saber <\/em>(&#8220;to know&#8221;) = <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[sa\u02c8\u03b2er]<\/strong><\/span>, but <em>tambi\u00e9n <\/em>(&#8220;also&#8221;) = <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>[tam\u02c8bjen]<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some aspect of the environment of a phoneme which determines which of its allophones will be used.
