If the rhyme consists of a long vowel (or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1289\">diphthong<\/a>) followed by zero or more <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1663\">consonants<\/a> (a so-called <strong>strong cluster<\/strong>), the syllable is heavy. If the rhyme consists of a short vowel followed by a maximum of one consonant (a <strong>weak cluster<\/strong>), then the syllable is light. <\/p>\n<p>Some examples from English:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>sooner <\/em>1st syllable heavy because it contains a long vowel.  2nd syllable light<\/li>\n<li><em>loudest <\/em>1st syllable heavy because it contains a diphthong.  2nd syllable heavy because the short vowel is followed by more than one consonant<\/li>\n<li><em>fish<\/em> a light syllable because the vowel is short and only one consonant follows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The weight of a syllable is important for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1542\">lexical stress<\/a> assignment in many languages.
