The changes relate the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=504\">plosive<\/a> system reconstructed for Proto-Indo-European (PIE) to that of Proto-Germanic (PGmc) and explain the differences between Germanic languages and other Indo-European languages, such as Greek and Latin, which were not subject to the changes.  For example, compare Latin <em>pater<\/em>, <em>piscis<\/em>  etc. to English <em>father<\/em>, <em>fish <\/em>etc.  <\/p>\n<p>The PIE plosive system is reconstructed as having:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>p t k<\/strong><\/span> which were replaced by <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>f \u03b8 x<\/strong><\/span> in PGmc<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>b d \u0261<\/strong><\/span> which were replaced by <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>p t k<\/strong><\/span> in PGmc<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>b\u02b1 d\u02b1 \u0261\u02b1<\/strong><\/span> which were replaced by <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>b d \u0261<\/strong><\/span> in PGmc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Apparent exceptions to Grimm&#8217;s law are dealt with by the later <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=2834\">Verner&#8217;s law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Also called <strong>Rask&#8217;s-Grimm&#8217;s Rule<\/strong> or <strong>The First Germanic Sound Shift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A set of complex historical sound changes, first discovered by Friedrich von Schlegel and Rasmus Rask, but developed and publicised by Jakob Grimm of fairy tale fame.
