The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=3433\">IPA <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=2067\">diacritic <\/a>for a palatalised sound is a raised <strong>j<\/strong> (U+02B2) following the relevant symbol, so for example <strong>t\u02b2<\/strong> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=527\">voiceless <\/a>palatalised <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=237\">alveolar<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=504\">plosive<\/a>.  Consonants may be palatalised through <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1519\">coarticulation<\/a> with a following <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1234\">high <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1236\">front<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=578\">vowel <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=522\" title=\":Palatal:\">palatal <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1663\">consonant<\/a>, as for the first consonant in the word <em>beauty <\/em>in most English <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=35\">accents<\/a>. Another possibility is for palatalisation for consonants to be <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=707\">contrastive <\/a>in a language. An example of plain vs palatalised <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=2026\">labiodental <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=557\">fricatives <\/a>from Russian: <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>kr\u0254f<\/strong><\/span> (&#8220;roof&#8221;) <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>kr\u0254f\u02b2<\/strong><\/span> (&#8220;blood&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>(2) as the name of a process whereby a consonant is replaced by a palatal consonant.  Some writers call this process <strong>palatalling<\/strong>.
