(1) as the name of a secondary articulation<\/a> which involves the presence of a wide stricture between the front of the tongue and the hard palate<\/a>. The IPA <\/a>diacritic <\/a>for a palatalised sound is a raised j<\/strong> (U+02B2) following the relevant symbol, so for example t\u02b2<\/strong> is a voiceless <\/a>palatalised alveolar<\/a> plosive<\/a>. Consonants may be palatalised through coarticulation<\/a> with a following high <\/a>front<\/a> vowel <\/a>or palatal <\/a>consonant<\/a>, as for the first consonant in the word beauty <\/em>in most English accents<\/a>. Another possibility is for palatalisation for consonants to be contrastive <\/a>in a language. An example of plain vs palatalised labiodental <\/a>fricatives <\/a>from Russian: kr\u0254f<\/strong><\/span> (“roof”) kr\u0254f\u02b2<\/strong><\/span> (“blood”).<\/p>\n (2) as the name of a process whereby a consonant is replaced by a palatal consonant. Some writers call this process palatalling<\/strong>.
