Lexical incidence differences involve the occurrence of different <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=709\">phonemes<\/a> in the same word in the two accents in question and do not necessarily have implications for the phonological systems of the two accents, nor for the phonetic realisation of the phonemes in question. An example of a lexical incidence difference between northern and southern accents of English involves words such as <em>pass<\/em>, <em>laugh<\/em>, <em>bath<\/em>. In many northern accents these contain the vowel phoneme <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/\u00e6\/<\/strong><\/span>, whereas in the south the vowel is usually <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/\u0251\u02d0\/<\/strong><\/span>. Both accents have both phonemes, <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/\u00e6\/<\/strong><\/span> in <em>gas<\/em>, <em>mass<\/em>, for instance, and <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\/\u0251\u02d0\/<\/strong><\/span> in <em>father<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A possible feature of the difference between two accents of a language.
