A root <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1064\">morpheme <\/a>containing a long <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=578\">vowel <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1289\">diphthong<\/a> has this replaced by a short vowel when the relevant <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1066\">syllable <\/a>falls at least three from the end in a derived form.  <\/p>\n<p>Some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>i\u02d0 \u2192 e<\/strong><\/span>  E.g. <em>serene <\/em>~ <em>serenity<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>e\u026a \u2192 \u00e6<\/strong><\/span> E.g. <em>sane <\/em>~ <em>sanity<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>a\u028a \u2192 \u028c<\/strong><\/span> E.g. <em>profound <\/em>~ <em>profundity<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>a\u026a \u2192 \u026a<\/strong><\/span> E.g. <em>derive<\/em>~ <em>derivative<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259\u028a \u2192 \u0252<\/strong><\/span> E.g. <em>provoke <\/em>~ <em>provocative<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phenomenon is fairly general, but there are exceptions.  <em>obesity <\/em> = <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259\u02c8bi\u02d0s\u0259ti<\/strong><\/span> instead of the expected *<span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u0259\u02c8bes\u0259ti<\/strong><\/span> is an example.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The name of an English phonological rule.
