The initial <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1663\">consonant <\/a>of the second element of a compound word is changed from <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=527\">voiceless <\/a>to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=595\">voiced<\/a>. An example is the well-known Japanese word <em>origami <\/em>(paper folding). The elements of this compound are <em>ori <\/em>(&#8220;fold&#8221;) and <em>kami <\/em>(&#8220;paper&#8221;). The process has many exceptions and is subject to many conditions. The most general constraint on the operation of rendaku is known as <strong>Lyman&#8217;s law<\/strong>.  If the second element of a compound contains a voiced <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=572\">obstruent<\/a>, then rendaku does not apply.
