An example from English: <em>bottles <\/em>pronounced as <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u02c8b\u0252tlz<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span> rather than <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u02c8b\u0252t\u0259lz<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The International Phonetic Alphabet provides a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=2067\">diacritic <\/a>to indicate that a consonant is syllabic.  It is a combining vertical line below (U+0329) as in <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>n\u0329 m\u0329 l\u0329<\/strong><\/span> or for symbols with a descender a vertical line above (U+030D) as in <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u014b\u030d \u0272\u030d<\/strong><\/span>.
