The opposite is <strong>lax<\/strong>. The phonetic correlates of tenseness vary somewhat from language to language, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=35\">accent <\/a>to accent.  Generally, tense vowels are <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1234\">closer <\/a>than the corresponding lax vowels.  Acoustically, they have a lower <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=824\">frequency <\/a>for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=492\">F1<\/a>.  In some instances, for example General British English, the tense vowels are longer than their lax counterparts: <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>i\u02d0<\/strong><\/span> > <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u026a<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>u\u02d0<\/strong><\/span> > <span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>\u028a<\/strong><\/span> etc., but this is certainly not the case for all accents of English.  Many Scottish English accents show no such length differences.
