Manner can be thought of as comprising a number of components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rank of stricture<\/strong>: the constriction in the vocal tract may be (a) a complete closure (b) a constriction close enough to cause air turbulence (c) a wider approximation which does not cause turbulence when accompanied by moderate rate of airflow. Some writers add a fourth rank, that of resonant, which is an articulation where the constriction is so wide that no friction occurs at any rate of airflow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speed of release of closure<\/strong>: this may be rapid as in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=504\" title=\"Plosive\">plosive<\/a> sound or slower as in an <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=93\" title=\":Affricate:\">affricate<\/a> sound.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rate of articulation<\/strong>: an articulation overall may be rapid as in a tap or slower as in a plosive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repetition<\/strong>: an articulation may be performed once only as in a plosive or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=3962\">tap<\/a>, or it may be repeated rapidly as in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=1670\" title=\"Trill\">trill<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soft palate position<\/strong>: the soft palate may be raised resulting in an oral articulation or lowered for a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=582\">nasal<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=877\">nasalised<\/a> articulation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=600\">Median<\/a> vs <a href=\"http:\/\/blogjam.name\/sid\/?page_id=602\">lateral<\/a> articulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>Often abbreviated to <strong>moa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An aspect of the production of speech sounds.
