Sponge

Words which contain the sound sequence ʌndʒ are spelled with <u> for the vowel:

dungeon, lunge, plunge, pungent

except for sponge, which is spelled with <o>.

Note: Philip Taylor tells me that the equestrian word longe also is pronounced with ʌndʒ
