:Morpheme:

Pronunciation GB: ˈmɔːfiːm GA: ˈmɔːrfiːm

The smallest linguistic structure which bears meaning. Take for example, the English word unable. This can be analysed as comprising two morphemes, the prefix un and the root able. The second of these is a free morpheme, because it may occur alone. The first is a bound morpheme, because it does not occur alone, but is always attached to other morphemes.
