A morphological device which involves the copying of the whole or part of a word, sometimes with minor alterations. Reduplication is used for a wide variety of purposes. Some examples:

  • emphasis Modern Standard Chinese 小小的 ɕjáuɕjǎudə, very small
  • diminutives Māori ˈweɾaˈweɾaˈweɾa, hot – warm
