[+continuant] sounds, such as vowels, fricatives and median approximants, are produced without a complete closure in the oral cavity. [-continuant] sounds have a complete oral closure and are known as stops and include plosives, affricates and nasals. Lateral approximants are also often classed as [-continuant].
