A part of the vocal tract which moves towards another (the passive articulator) to form a constriction during the articulation of a sound. Articulators which may be active are: upper lip, lower lip, tongue tip, tongue blade, tongue front, tongue back, tongue root, vocal folds. For bilabial and glottal articulations, both articulators are active.
