:Final syllable lengthening:

The increase in duration of a syllable before a pause or before an intonational boundary. The increase in duration gives the impression that the syllable is stressed. Compare the duration of the final syllable of weakness with the second syllable of weaknesses. Informal measurements resulted in a duration of 550ms for the former and 260ms for the latter.
