One of a number of constraints on phonological structure posited by Optimality theory. Faithfulness constraints ensure that the output form of the phonology is as close as possible to the input form. An example of such a constraint is MAX-IO: the deletion of segments is prohibited. Faithfulness constraints may be violated in a particular language, because they are ranked lower than some other constraint.
