An acoustic or electronic device (or a computer simulation of such) which responds differentially in the frequency domain to its input. A high-pass filter attenuates the input in the low frequency region. A band-pass filter attenuates both the low and high frequency regions. A band-stop filter attenuates the input in the mid frequency range. A low-pass filter attenuates high frequencies.
