A speech synthesis system developed by Haskins Laboratories in the 1940s and 50s. Stylised spectrograms were painted on acetate and these patterns were converted to an acoustic signal by an array of photo-electric cells. The system was used to investigate the critical cues for speech perception by systematic variation of acoustic parameters.
