Lateral sounds are produced with one or both tongue rims lowered and with a complete obstruction on the mid-line of the vocal tract. The airstream is allowed to escape over the lowered tongue rims. Lateral articulations include approximants such as l ɫ ʎ, fricatives such as ɬ ɮ and the click ||.
