:Tone sandhi:

Pronunciation ˈsændi

The alteration of the phonetic form of a lexical tone under the influence of a neighbouring tone. An example from Modern Standard Chinese: the word 不 bu (=”not”) generally has a falling tone, but if the next tone is itself a falling tone the tone on 不 changes to a rising tone.
